Dane hadn’t focused on it as much yesterday as he wished he had now, but when they’d been driving around deciding what motel to choose, he’d checked out what kinds of businesses were in the area, mostly out of curiosity. And concern over his safety, and Alexa’s.

There appeared to be more offices than retail around here. Several motels besides theirs, though not many. Convenience stores and liquor stores and fast-food restaurants on nearby blocks.

And a rental car place.

Fortunately, he had noticed that. And that was what he needed now. That location was where he headed, albeit carefully. Keeping watch around him to attempt to be sure no one was paying attention to him.

And keeping watch around the motel he was leaving to make sure he didn’t see Roger/Alexa. Or, more important, that she wasn’t outside anywhere watching him.

Was that their rental car driving in that area? Could be, darn it. He’d have to be even more careful.

Was it foolish to ditch her at this point? Probably. But it had gotten personal. He appreciated her watching over him, sure. But even though they hadn’t become close friends—exactly—as he’d done with Alvin, he really cared about her, especially now. He couldn’t bear the idea that Alexa might get hurt, or worse, because of him. Even if he had been hurt in the line of duty, he was determined that she would not be.

So now he stayed as much in the shade as possible. Moved off the sidewalk to use parking lots of some of the stores nearby. Ducked around the block to get there a different way. Checked his GPS often to make sure he was ultimately heading in the right direction.

Fortunately, he was. It took about ten minutes, but he was soon outside the location.

Also fortunately, it was open, despite the hour. He saw someone coming out with a car key in his hand and heading into the parking lot in front.

And so, Daniel, patting his pocket to make sure he felt his wallet there, headed inside, dragging his carryon bag behind him, the backpack over his shoulder, and making it appear that every step was an ordeal. After all, not only was he Daniel at the moment, but he was the form of Daniel that Alexa had created, big and senior and bulky.

But he did want to hurry, or at least not be visible from the street much longer. Alexa was hunting for him, and he didn’t want to be found by her.

He entered the room that mostly contained a reception stand. Two desks were located behind it, each occupied by a woman. The one closest to the door stood as he entered. “Can I help you, sir?” she called.

“Yes, please,” he responded in Daniel’s cracked voice, although he had removed his hairpiece since he’d need to resemble the photo on his fake driver’s license. “I need to rent a car for a couple days. Do you have any available?” He didn’t mention he would return it to one of their facilities in Phoenix.
